2016 Extended Tirage Sparkling Riesling

A stunningly bright sparkling Riesling, bone-dry with gorgeously developed notes of preserved lemon, kumquat, and quince with racy acidity.

This was our second vintage of Exteded Tirage Sparkling Riesling. The wine was aged on the lees for 44 months before being disgorged. Now that’s extended tirage!

Certainly on the golden side here, with citrus, yellow apple, and what I could swear is a bit of petrol. That makes me think that this is a Riesling and I know there is only one of those in the lineup—the problem with single-blind tastings. Quite tart and perky on the palate, this is certainly outside the “norms” of sparkling wine. And I like it, a lot. Fruity, but with a laser-sharp acidity, focused, and mineral, this has one of the lengthiest finishes in the group. Fantastic.

This sparkling, bone-dry Riesling is gorgeous with bright acidity and ripe notes of pineapple, quince and golden apples from spending 44 months en tirage.

Crispy fried coconut shrimp with a tangy-chili dipping sauce would be so good with this wine!

Winemaking Notes

Similar to the previous two vintages, the 2016 growing season continued to push the envelope for defining the new normal in Oregon as one of the earliest on record. An unusually warm spring brought bud break between 2-4 weeks early, and a short heat spell at bloom condensed the flowering period, resulting in a smaller fruit set. Summer provided average conditions with fewer heat spikes than the 2014 or 2015 vintages, which led to smaller berry size and a high concentration of flavors.
A warm August shepherded along the early vintage at Brooks, running from September 2-October 12th. Though it was an intense growing season due to the early start, the harvested grapes showed wonderful concentration and complexity with high natural acidity.
